I understand and see it all the time. Big companies don’t like change. That’s why they’re usually slow to react when they get disrupted. High performing teams break down the silos. I’ll take self-service, over opening a ticket with the ops team and waiting, any day of the week.
Developers don’t need to be a good ops admin if you automate deployment. Then developer’s just need to know how to setup the automation. It’s not much harder than setting up their own development environment. You still need Ops/SRE to run the infrastructure, but not to deploy what’s running on it. That you should let the developers do.
